This is a post to mark Blog Action Day, where bloggers unite on one day to discuss a pressing issue, this year it is climate change. It is after all important to most students since we are the future, why do we have to inherit the mess?

So, the climate is in turmoil, politicians are talking about change. But will it ever happen or is it a case of too little too late?

My focus of this post is on the problem areas. For sure a lot is being done, but is everyone pulling their weight?

• Car manufacturers are moving towards alternatives to the internal combustion engine
• Oil companies are pumping money into alternative energy sources
• Recycling is steadily increasing
• Household are reducing their “carbon footprint”

This is all well and good but is it solving the problem? Without doubt every little helps. But I can’t help noticing some industries which are hiding in the shadows. These include:

• Steel Manufacture
• Cement Manufacture
• Farm Animals
• Shipping

It may seem to be an odd 4 industries to highlight, for sure there are more which should be on this list.

The problem is the world is still growing.

Therefore if we take the first two, steel and cement manufacture, there will still be a rising demand for these materials especially in emerging economies. These two industries could produce 20% of global output of carbon dioxide. The problem is the chemistry involved leads to a large emission of greenhouse gas. Yet there seems no realistic attempts to find an alternative? Will the media turn a blind eye or encourage research and development?

As for farm animals, there is little that can be done. Unless we all become vegetarian, I’m not a fan of this idea! Research is being carried out to reduce cows flatulence (burping & farting). But I think this is an area which will prove difficult/impossible to cut emissions.

As for shipping, I’m kind of drawing attention to this because I think it gets off lightly compared to the much maligned airline industry. Not that the airline industry shouldn’t get any slack as it is a (unnecessary?) luxury. But the shipping industry which contributes a similar amount to global warming as the airline industry seems to get off relatively lightly. What ever was wrong with sailing?!

Well that’s my rant for one year, maybe this time next year there will be progress in at least 3 of the industries mentioned. Don’t hold your breathe I guess…

Music is very important to students, I had not been exposed to such a wide range of music until I started uni.

It will be no surprise that the iPod and iTunes are a students best friend. But can Britain’s biggest supermarket muscle in on iTunes market share when it comes to downloadable music?

Well Tesco have just relaunched there music download service, rebranding it Tesco Digital.

Not that imaginative, but it’s to the point.

So apart from the flashy new website. What can students and others expect from this relaunched service?

• MP3 files that work on iPods- the selection is slightly limited at the moment, previously Tesco only provided WMA files which are associated with windows media player, therefore incompatible with iTunes and iPods. Although WMA files are still most common on the site. Another advantage of having MP3 files will be that you can burn them to CD’s with none or little restrictions!
• TV & Film downloads is coming soon!
• Tracks from 79p same as iTunes
• You get clubcard points!
• Free games to waste time before exams!

Will it be successful in challenging iTunes? Well I’m not to sure, certainly it is a step in the right direction. The design of the site gives it a more appealing look to younger visitors, whereas before it just looked like an extension to the grocery site. Certainly the brand and the financial clout of Tesco should be considered. But this is an attack on uncharted territory. For me iTunes will remain dominant. This may prove an impossible challenge for a supermarket.

But why not check Tesco Digital out and give your views?

Whilst trawling through the internet for ideas, I came across this – blog action day! The aim of this is to get as many bloggers to post about the environment on the 15th October (today). With the aim I guess to help raise awareness about environmental issues to a wider audience. Whether this show of people power will have much influence on higher powers within society, I don’t know. Although anything is worth a try, especially with so many people writing blogs, or indeed reading them.

Hence why I’m going to join in!

So here goes, I suspect a good majority may choose to post about global warming and the greenhouse effect, therefore I’m going to steer clear of this well covered subject.

What I’m going to discuss is rubbish, yes that lovely waste of space that surrounds your food, whether its cardboard or plastic based it still seems to fail to find its way to rubbish bins or even better to suitable facilities where it can be recycled. How often do you go for a walk in the countryside or local parks, to find a coke can failing miserably to hide in the grass, or the chocolate bar wrapper which fails to blend in with the leaves being blown by? Surely it is easy for someone to have -

a.) But it in the nearest bin,

or

b.) Take it home and dispose of it.

Yes I know it might not be a big issue in relation to global warming, but if we can’t be responsible for the local environment we live in, how can we ever be responsible for the planet we live on?
